Why enrolling onto a paediatric first aid course is essential for childcare

Paediatric first aid is the treatment given to a young child or an infant. If you work in the childcare industry it is necessary to undergo training to gain the knowledge and skills to deal with emergencies that may happen to children under your care. In fact, in the UK it is mandatory that all childminders in England and Wales must have completed their first aid certification recognised by the National Childminding Association (NCMA) upon registration.

It is important that the course you complete is recognised by the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted) and your local childminder registering organisation. However, you have to upgrade your certification regularly by adhering to the requisites needed for the governing body every three years.

By undergoing a course with an accredited training centre, you will be able to understand and gain expertise in dealing with possible incidents where paediatric first aid becomes of utmost importance. The training focusses on providing first aid to children and babies. Situations involving conditions such as head injuries, Cardio Pulmonary Resucitation (CPR), choking, sprains and strains, bee stings, broken bones, nose bleeds, eye injuries, or swallowing of objects.

As a childminder or Nursery Nurse you will be required to administer first aid. This is the reason why you must have the working knowledge of how to go about giving assistance to younger children. As part of our nationally accredited Paediatric Course, you will learn about all of the above situations and learn how to apply the appropriate treatment to the various conditions.

With your training experience, you will have the required knowledge to be prepared for anything and provide first aid support responsibly.
Children by their very nature are extremely unpredictable and can be susceptible to various types of injuries. Your paediatric training will give you the expertise to confront serious life-threatening injuries.

By using a few simple techniques that you learn at an accredited paediatric first aid program, you will be able to deal with situations such as broken bones, infant choking, and other emergency conditions. These are the skills that can be life saving for children under care as sometimes even the first few seconds after an accident can make a huge difference between life and death.

Millie’s Mark is named after Millie Thompson, who tragically died after choking on food at nursery in 2012 when she was just nine months old. Her parents set up Millie’s Trust as a legacy to improve childcare standards in childcare nurseries in England.

Millie’s Mark is awarded as a special endorsement to childcare providers that go above and beyond the minimum requirements by having 100% of staff trained in paediatric first aid and ensuring that everything learned during the course is kept alive and in the forefront of practitioners’ minds so that they are confident, ready and capable.
Millie’s Mark accreditation provides reassurance for parents that all childcare practitioners know what to do in a paediatric first aid situation.
It acknowledges that children’s safety is at the forefront of your nursery’s mind when caring for children.
